A few words from Paul on X-Plane 10.

I purchased X-Plane 10 for Xmas, and I am now wondering what I let myself in for. My initial reason for buying it was to get a sim that is "as real as it gets", and to stick it to Microsoft, who reportedly will not be supporting third party developers with their new MS Flight.

X-Plane is very much a community based flightsim. Believe it or not there are no buildings at any airport apart from Seattle, and the default aircraft are to put it mildly, crap.

After weeks of searching through websites and forums, I have found links to great aircraft and scenery, including VOZ 1.8 for XP!! For those who don't know what that is, it is complete scenery and many airports for Australia. It is apparently a bit "buggy" in XP10. I have found complete scenery for NZ plus numerous airports. And guess what? An Air NZ Boeing 767 and a 737-300 in Air NZ's 'holiday' livery.

I found a plugin which is designed by Peter Dowson which does for XP10 what FSUIPC does for MSFS. It is called XPUIPC funnily enough. Among other things, it will allow FS Commander to be used with XP!

I completed my first flight last night and it was not easy. My advise to anyone is to print the manual and read it from cover to cover. Spend time setting up views and joystick assignments. Read forum posts even if they seem irrelevant. You will be surprised what you pick up and find!

If anyone would like some links to some XP websites, let me know.

I am not writing this to tell anyone to go out and purchase XP10. Quite the opposite. If you do want it, then be prepared to spend hours doing setups and research, oh and learning how to fly again!! Forums will tell you that FSX is the best out there, and no one is debating that! That is all for now, but I will keep you updated with XP as time goes on.
